Summary
DescriptionSt Austell, Pentewan Harbour - geograph.org.uk - 138242.jpg |
English: St Austell: Pentewan Harbour. Last used in the mid 20th century, the harbour was, with Par, Charlestown and Fowey, a place of export for 19th century china clay. It functioned in its intended role from 1826 to 1919. Sand has effectively buried the entrance channel. This was always a difficult harbour to maintain and operate. China clay was brought here by tramroad from St Austell; wagons were hauled by horses. The harbour and associated works were constructed for Sir Christopher Hawkins of Trewithen |
