Summary
DescriptionThe Playhouse, Greenside Place - geograph.org.uk - 1346792.jpg |
English: The Playhouse, Greenside Place Originally designed as a theatre by the Glasgow architect, John Fairweather, the Playhouse opened as Scotland's biggest cinema in the first year of the 'talkies' in 1929. It closed in 1974 and was scheduled for demolition, but, thanks to local petitions which collected almost 30,000 signatures, it was saved, renovated and re-opened as a theatre in 1993. Its seating capacity of over 3,000 is still the largest of any theatre building in the UK. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edinburgh_Playhouse |
