English: A landing party from the German Navy cruiser Emden leaving the jetty of Direction Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean jetty on 9 November 1914 during World War I. In the background is Ayesha the vessel with which they repaired and then sailed without a chart to Padang, Sumatra. The German landing party eventually made their way back by ship, overland, and train to Constantinople (now Istanbul) and on to Germany. |
