Hiranuma rose to prominence as an official in the Ministry of Justice. After serving as minister of Justice under Prime Minister Gonnohyōe Yamamoto, he served as a privy councillor. After serving as president of the privy council, he became prime minister in 1939, but resigned the same year. Afterwards he returned to cabinet under Fumimaro Konoe. After the Japanese surrender, he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East for his role in World War II.
