Matzoon[lower-alpha 1] (Armenian: մածուն, matsun) or matsoni[lower-alpha 2] (Georgian: მაწონი, mats'oni) is a fermented milk product of Armenian[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] origin, distributed in Armenia[8] and Georgia.[9][10][11] The so-called Caspian Sea yogurt circulated and commercialized in Japan is sometimes said to be the same type of yogurt as matzoon,[10] but a comparison of microbiota and viscosity found that the two are entirely different.[12] Matsoni is patented by Georgia since 24 January 2012.[13][14][15]
