It will be the first season since 2010–11 without goalkeeper David de Gea and defender Phil Jones, who left the club when their contracts expired. With De Gea and Jones' departures, United were without a Premier League winner in their squad for the first time since the 1992–93 season;[1] however, the short-term signing of Jonny Evans, who won three Premier League titles with the club, for their pre-season campaign means that this is briefly not the case.
If Evans is not signed to a permanent contract, this will also be the first time since the 1973–74 season that United will not select a player who either used to play for them under Sir Alex Ferguson or would go on to do so in one of the Scot's United teams.[2]
