Մումբայը Հնդկաստանի ամենաբազմամարդ քաղաքն է. Մումբայի մունիցիպալ կորպորացիա անվանումը կրող բնակավայրի կազմի մեջ ընդգրկված են Մահարաշտրա նահանգի երկու վարչական միավոր՝ բուն Մումբայը (157 կմ², 3 145 966 բնակիչ՝ 2011 թվականին) և, այսպես կոչված՝ մերձքաղաքային Մումբայը (446 կմ², 9 332 481 բնակիչ՝ 2011 թվականին), ընդհանուր առմամբ՝ 603 կմ², 12 478 447 բնակիչ՝ 2011 թվականին[7]։ Արբանյակ քաղաքների հետ միասին՝ Մումբայը կազմում է աշխարհում իր մեծությամբ ութերորդ քաղաքային ագլոմերացիան 21,3 միլիոն մարդ բնակչությամբ[8][9][10][11]։
Գտնվում է ծովի մակերևույթից 10 մետր բարձրության վրա։ Բնակչության խտությունը կազմում է 21 665 մարդ մեկ քառակուսի կիլոմետրի վրա (այս ցուցանիշով աշխարհում զբաղեցնում է երկրորդ տեղը՝ զիջելով միայն Ֆիլիպինների մայրաքաղաք Մանիլային), բնակչության մոտավորապես կեսը մարաթհիներ են, քառորդ մասը՝ գուջարաթցիներ։ Քաղաքն զբաղեցնում է Բոմբեյ կղզին՝ ամբողջությամբ և Սոլսեթ կղզու հարավային մասը. դրանք միմյանց հետ կապված են կամուրջներով ու պատվարներով[12]։
Մումբայը միջազգային հաղորդակցության ուղիների խոշորագույն հանգույց է։ Ունի բնական խոր նավահանգիստ, որն ամենախոշորն է Հնդկաստանի արևմուտքում։ Քաղաքի ուղևորատար տերմինալով է անցնում Հնդկաստանի ողջ ուղևորահոսքի գրեթե հիսուն տոկոսը։ Այն նաև երկրի տնտեսական ու մշակութային կարևորագույն կենտրոններից մեկն է, համարվում է հսկայական հակադրությունների քաղաք, որտեղ ճոխություն ու շքեղությունը հարևանություն են անում ծայրահեղ աղքատության՝ հյուսիսային հատվածում ծվարած հետնախորշերի հետ, որոնք զանազան վարակիչ հիվանդությունների հարուցիչների որջեր են[13][14]։
Այդուհանդերձ, Հնդկաստանի մյուս քաղաքների համեմատ Մումբայն ավելի բարձր կենսամակարդակով քաղաք է, աչքի է ընկնում գործարար մեծ ակտիվությամբ։ Աշխատանքի տեղավորվելու լայն հնարավորություններն այստեղ են գրավում հարյուրավոր ու հազարավոր բանվորների ինչպես բուն իսկ Հնդկաստանից, այնպես էլ Հարավային Ասիայի երկրներից[15]։
Անվանումն առաջացել է Մումբա աստվածուհու անունից[16], այն աստվածուհու, որին պաշտում էին տեղի ձկնորսները։
Մումբայի դիրքը մեղմացնում է նրա կլիման և դարձնում ավելի տանելի, քան նույն լայնության այլ քաղաքների կլիման։ Մումբայի համար ամենալավ ժամանակը հոկտեմբերից փետրվարն է, երբ այնքան էլ խիստ շոգ չի լինում։ Դրանից հետո օդը գնալով տաքանում է և հունիսի սկզբներին սկսվում է մուսսոնային անձրևների շրջանը, որը տևում է մինչև սեպտեմբերի վերջը։
Հայտնի է 16-րդ դարից։ Անցյալում (1661-ից) եղել է բրիտանական գլխավոր ֆակտորիան ու հենակետը Արևմտյան Հնդկաստանում։
Բոմբեյ քաղաքում հայերը հաստատվել են 18-19-րդ դդ.: Վաճառաշահ քաղաք դարձնելու նպատակով անգլիացիներն այստեղ են հրավիրել սուրաթահայերին՝ նրանց տրամադրելով հողամաս և վարկ՝ տներ կառուցելու համար։ Հայերը զբաղվել են հիմնականում առևտրով, կենտրոնացած են եղել Հայկական թաղամասում։ 1796-ին կառուցվել է Սուրբ Պետրոս առաքյալ եկեղեցին (կանգուն է ցայսօր)։ Բոմբեյում գործունեություն է ծավալել հայ խոշոր վաճառական Խոջա Մինասը (ունեցել է սեփական օվկիանոսային նավեր)։ 18-րդ դարի կեսին Բոմբեյում գործել է հայ առևտրական կազմակերպություն, որն ապրանքափոխանակություն է իրականացրել եվրոպական և ասիական շատ երկրների հետ։ 1815-ին հիմնվել է «Օճանասփյուռ ժողով» մշակութային ընկերությունը։ Լույս են տեսել «Ծաղկաստան» (1822, վիմատիպ), «Բումայու հայոց լրաթուղթ» (1844) պարբերականները։ Պահպանվել են Բոմբեյում գրված մի շարք հայերեն ձեռագրեր[17]։
