Ekstrapolasie verwys na die metode om 'n projeksie te maak op grond van beskikbare data, in 'n tydvak wat verwyderd is van die beskikbare veld van data. Hierdie projeksie kan in die verlede of die toekoms wees. 'n Lineêre projeksie veronderstel dat omstandighede en prosesse wat inspeel op data, dieselfde is in die geprojekteerde toestand as by die beskikbare data.
