ገመድ የሰለሉ ስንጥርጣሪዎች (fibres) (ለጥንካሬ እና ለማያያዝ ሲባል) በተለያየ መንገድ ተፈትለው የሚዘጋጅ ርዝመት ያለው ነገር ነው። ጥሩ የልጠጣዊ ጥንካሬ (tensile strength) ያለው ቢሆንም፤ በጭሞቃዊ ጥንካሬ (compressive strength) በኩል ግን ደካማ ነው። እነዚህ ሁለት ባህሪያት የሚያመለክቱትም ገመድ ለመጎተት እንጂ ለመግፋት እንደማያገለግል ነው።
