Epona ye a diosa protectora d'os caballos en a relichión galorromana y hispanorromana, que son sincretismos entre as relichions indichenas locals y a relichión romana. D'orichen celta, o suyo culto plegó ta provincias no celticas como Mauritania y mesmo Roma entre os sieglos I y III. Tamién ye diosa d'a fertilidat, como indican as representacions de cuernos y potros que bi ha en bellas esculturas.

Epona significa a gran yeugua. Tien o sufixo superlativo -on, en forma femenina -a, que se veye en muitas diosas celtas, Rigantona, Sirona, y posibles toponimos sacros Bayona. A radiz Epos ye gala y significa caballo, paralela a la radiz chonica Hipos. As dos provienen d'o proto-indoeuropeu Ekwos, d'on bien o latín Equus, que conserva a -kw-.
En lusitano, luenga que on no cambea o grupo -kw- ta -p- se conoixe o teonimo Iccona. En unas inscripcions trobatas en a Ilesia de Paramio (Zamora), puet leyer-se DVERIA EPPONE RITIS. A variant Eppone con dos P puet representar una prebatina d'adaptación a o latín a partir d'Iccona. Una variant Epana s'ha trobato en inscripcións provenients de Comiellas (Cantabria), y Epane Monte Bernorio (Palencia).
Bi ha autors que relacionan a Obana d'una inscripción de Lepida Celsa (antiga Viliella d'Ebro y Exelsa) con Epona. En 1887 se trobó una lama de plomo en Rom, Deux-Sèvres (l'antigo Raurarum) con una inscripción latina prou larga d'o sieglo I aC. Ista lama se fació con un o sacrificio d'una potra y a ofrenda d'un caldero. Se i puet leyer diferents epitetos dedicatos a Epona: Eponina, Atanta, Potia (como a Potnia griega), Dibonia (diosa buena), Catona (de cath, combate), Vovesia.
