La Casa Padellàs (a vegades mal anomenada Clariana-Padellàs)[1] és un palau del segle xvi construït originalment al carrer dels Mercaders, 25, cantonada amb el de Tarascó,[2] de Barcelona. El 1931 va ser desmuntat i posteriorment reconstruït a la Plaça del Rei, on des del 1943 és la seu del Museu d'Història de Barcelona. Està catalogat com a bé cultural d'interès nacional.[3][4]

S'estructura entorn d'un pati amb escala descoberta, amb portes a l'estudi al primer replà i, al capdamunt, un vestíbul, cobert amb fusta i obert al pati amb quatre arcs apuntats, des del qual s'accedeix a les diverses estances privades. Malgrat els trets estructurals goticitzants, que s'observen a portes i finestres -molt abundants a nivell d'entresol tant a les façanes com al pati- hi ha també evidents símptomes de penetració puntual renaixentista en forma de medallons, cartel·les, escuts i fullatges, que no impliquen l'assimilació de noves pautes espacials. Els balcons del principal, del segle xviii, segurament van substituir les finestres coronelles originals.[3]
Segons es dedueix dels fogatges de 1497 i 1515, la casa es devia edificar entre les acaballes del segle xv i les primeres dècades del xvi.[5] A través de l'anàlisi dels escuts que decoren portes i finestres, que corresponen als Hostalric (pals vibrats), Sabastida (lleó rampant i banda amb creus), Montbui (pals ondats) i Desplà (losanjat), Frederic Udina va concloure que fou construïda per Joan d'Hostalric-Sabastida i Llull,[6][7][8] conseller reial i governador dels comtats de Rosselló i Cerdanya,[9] nomenat cavaller de l'Orde l'Esperó d'Or el 1513.[10] La seva filla Guiomar d'Hostalric i de Montbui-Tagamanent[11] es va casar amb el mestre racional Francesc de Gralla i Desplà,[12] i l'hereva del matrimoni fou Jerònima de Gralla i d'Hostalric,[13] casada amb Lluís de Requesens i de Zúñiga, preceptor de l'Orde de Sant Jaume de l'Espasa.[14]
El 1584, la seva filla Mencia de Requesens-Zúñiga i de Gralla (1557-1618)[15][16] va vendre la casa al mercader de Vic Montserrat Casamitjana[17] per 3.120 lliures.[18] Fou succeït pel seu fill Rafael de Casamitjana i Rovirola,[19] i aquest pel seu fill Rafel de Casamitjana i d'Erill,[20] que fou conseller en cap de Barcelona (1651-1653). La seva germana Elisabet[21] es va casar amb Pere de Padellàs (†1653), oriünd de Balaguer,[22] i l'hereu del matrimoni fou Francesc de Padellàs i de Casamitjana.[23]
El seu fill Francesc de Padellàs i de Pastors[24] va ser capità de regiment de la Coronela però al final de la Guerra de Successió es va posar al servei de Felip V. El seu fill Bernardí de Padellàs i Puig[25] va ser nomenat baró de Les Camposines per Carles III d'Espanya el 1759 i fou membre de l'Acadèmia de Bones Lletres. En el seu testament del 1766, nomenà hereu universal el seu nebot Josep Antoni de Padellàs i Fernández de Caballero,[26] fill del primer matrimoni del seu germà Antoni[27] amb Teresa Fernández de Caballero. Tanmateix, aquest va morir poc després,[28] i la seva successora Teresa, vídua del militar Domingo Fernández de Caballero, va renunciar en favor d'Ignasi de Padellàs i Togores,[29][30] fill del segon matrimoni d'Antoni amb Ignàsia de Togores i Bermúdez de Castro,[31] que fou nomenada administradora de l'herència de Bernardí de Padellàs.[32]
El 1777 i el 1786, Ignasi de Padellàs va demanar permís per a obrir-hi finestres,[33][34] novament el 1789 per a convertir una finestra en un balcó amb ampit,[35] i el 1793 per a eixamplar i aixecar una altra finestra.[36] La seva filla Ramona de Padellàs i de Portell[37] es va casar amb el seu oncle Joan Nepomuceno de Togores i Llàcer, cavaller de l'Orde de Sant Joan de Jerusalem,[38][39] i l'hereva del matrimoni fou Josepa de Togores i de Padellàs,[40][41] que morí el 1881 i llegà el seu patrimoni al seu marit Joan Antoni López de Pastor, a condició que fes servir el cognom Padellàs.[42][26][43][44]
El 1928, la casa va passar a mans de l'Ajuntament de Barcelona, i el 1931, a causa de la construcció de grans edificis d'oficines a la Via Laietana al seu costat (vegeu Seu del Foment del Treball Nacional i Casa Cambó),[45] que en posava en perill la conservació, va ser desmuntada pedra a pedra per a ser reconstruïda a la plaça del Rei cantonada amb el carrer del Veguer, on va substituir unes cases que es van considerar de menor interès arquitectònic.[46] D'aquesta manera, serviria per a completar de forma més sumptuosa el conjunt monumental de la plaça.[47] Les obres de reconstrucció i fonamentació en la nova ubicació, dirigides per l'arquitecte municipal Joaquim Vilaseca, van comportar la troballa de les restes de la ciutat romana, de manera que es va decidir reedificar-la sobre pilars exempts per tal de conservar-les.[48] Les excavacions es van perllongar fins a l'any 1935, i es van aturar durant la Guerra Civil espanyola (1936-1939).
El 30 d'abril del 1940, el nou Ajuntament franquista va acordar convertir la casa en la seu del Museu d'Història de Barcelona, inaugurat el 14 d'abril del 1943, coincidint amb la celebració de les Festes Colombines al Saló del Tinell per a commemorar els 450 anys de l'arribada de Colom a Barcelona.[10] A finals dels anys 1980, les sales de les plantes primera i segona van acollir les seccions dedicades a la història medieval i moderna. Posteriorment van romandre tancades al públic i es van reobrir, ja remodelades, el 1996, amb motiu de l'exposició temporal Barcelona en temps dels Àustries.[49] Després d'una nova reforma, que ha cobert el pati amb una claraboia, el museu va tornar va obrir el març del 2023.[50][51]
Abans de les obres, Agustí Duran i Sanpere va demanar autorització per excavar el subsòl de la zona, però li va ser denegada. La troballa d'una àmfora va fer que es revoqués la negativa i s'iniciés l'excavació sistemàtica del subsòl del solar, per a la qual cosa es va desfer els murs de formigó que ja s'havien alçat i es va intentar reparar els danys produïts.[48]
Hi destacà la troballa, per primera vegada, del parament interior d'un sector de la muralla romana. A més, es posà al descobert un sector de la cara interior de la muralla, una part de l'intervallum o carrer de circumval·lació interior de la ciutat, amb les clavegueres corresponents, i les diverses dependències. Aquestes restes arqueològiques van ser interpretades com una domus. S'hi recolliren nombrosos pesos de telers, espàtules, agulles, agulles de cap i eines de tocador.[48] A més, s'hi documentà part del que devia constituir una construcció termal, de la qual ens resta la piscina natatio del frigidari i la zona de desguàs. L'existència de dipòsits i la posterior construcció d'unes termes en el sector, de les quals només resta la piscina del frigidarium, va fer pensar Duran i Sanpere en una casa de banys, ja que va considerar l'existència simultània de les restes del conjunt termal i els dipòsits de les instal·lacions prèvies industrials.[48]
L'estudi exhaustiu de les restes per part de l'arqueòloga Júlia Beltran de Heredia, però, reinterpretà el conjunt com una instal·lació especialitzada denominada fullonica. El tenyit de teles, cintes o peces de roba usades es duia a terme a les tintoreries (tinctoriae). L'entrada als tallers es feia des del vial que anava resseguint la muralla, l'antic interuallum. Al tram de carrer situat al davant de les dues instal·lacions s'hi abocaven els rebuigs dels tallers i tota mena de residus, segurament producte de la neteja de piques i recipients. En aquest abocador s'han pogut localitzar diversos nivells que contenien tints, plantes i restes minerals, productes que es feien servir per tenyir i rentar roba. La datació de les dues instal·lacions es pot fixar al segle ii. Els dos tallers dedicats a la neteja i tenyiment de roba es localitzen pròxims a la porta d'entrada a la ciutat que enllaçava amb el cardo maximus. L'insula presentava façana a l'interuallum, on se situen ambdues entrades independents i contigües a les dues instal·lacions. S'han conservat els sistemes d'evacuació de les instal·lacions que abocaven les aigües residuals a tres clavegueres que anaven fora la ciutat. Dues d'aquestes confluïen per a anar a trobar la claveguera principal que discorre al llarg del cardo minor. Els dos tallers contigus i segurament relacionats varen utilitzar com a abocador el vial públic, l'antic interuallum, que al segle ii havia perdut la seva primitiva funció.[48]
Al sud-oest, es documentà l'existència d'una piscina del frigidari' d'unes termes que es construí en aquest sector a l'antiguitat tardana (segles v-vi). D'aquest edifici termal, només s'ha conservat parcialment estructures corresponents a dos, o possiblement tres, àmbits, un dels quals correspon a la piscina. Es tracta d'una construcció de planta quadrangular amb escales d'accés en un dels costats. Es pot documentar el sistema de clavegueram en direcció a l'interuallum i a l'exterior de la ciutat. Semblaria que la seva interpretació es deu a una natatio del bloc fred d'un edifici termal. Al costat de la piscina hi ha altres murs que semblen definir dues sales, de les quals es desconeix els seus límits posteriors. La sala més septentrional ocupa parcialment el cardo minor i presenta algunes dificultats de relació constructiva amb la resta de l'edifici termal.[48]
