Ganed yn Dundee, Teyrnas yr Alban, ac astudiodd ym Mhrifysgol St Andrews. Dylanwadwyd arno gan y Diwygiad Protestannaidd, a ffoes i Ffrainc i osgoi gael ei erlid am heresi. Gyda'i frodyr Robert a John, fe olygydd y prif lyfr canu Protestannaidd a ddefnyddid am oesoedd yn yr Alban: Ane Compendius Buike of Godly and Spirituall Sangs, Collectit Out of Sundrie Partes of the Scripture, wyth Sundrie of Uther Ballates Changed out of Prophane Sangs, for Avoyding of Sinne and Harlotrie (tua 1548). Priodolir hefyd iddo ysgrifennu'r rhyddiaith The Complaynt of Scotland (1548).
Bu farw yn Lloegr tua 64 oed.
