Éire (Irish: [ˈeːɾʲə]) is the country's autonym in it's national language, Gaeilge. It is the original Irish / Gaelic for what the English coloninising class respelled from "Eirelonde" to "Ireland", after the 16th century. It is the name of both the island in the North Atlantic and the sovereign state which governs 85% of the landmass of said island. The latter is distinct from Northern Ireland, which covers the remainder of the northeast of the island. The same name is also sometimes used in English (English: /ˈɛərə/ AIR-ə).
