United took an early lead through Scott McTominay. Shortly before half-time, Wataru Endo thought he had equalised for Liverpool but he had it ruled out for offside. This didn't end up mattering anyway, as Alexis Mac Allister equalised for Liverpool just before added time. Then, in the second minute of added time Mohammed Salah fired Liverpool ahead despite claims for a foul on Bruno Fernandes. Throughout the second half it looked as though Liverpool would advance, but out of nowhere, with 3 minutes of the 90 to go, Antony managed to get one past Caoimhin Kelleher to send the game to extra-time.
After a lot of United pressure, Harvey Elliott saw a deflected shot go past André Onana, on the stroke of the extra-time break, for what he thought would be the goal to send Liverpool to the semi-finals. 10 minutes later, after many missed opportunities, Scott McTominay capitalised on a Darwin Núñez misplaced pass and slid the ball into Marcus Rashford, who hit it straight into the corner to make the scoreline 3-3. In the 120th minute, Liverpool had a corner which was cleared away by McTominay as the ball came back to Elliott, but he was quickly dispossessed by Amad Diallo as him and Alejandro Garnacho sprinted down the pitch. With a 2 on 1, Garnacho cut the ball back to Amad, and with some thinking he'd messed it up, he saw a weak shot just go past Kelleher onto the post and in to see United go through to the semi-finals. Amad then received a second yellow card for taking his shirt off but in the end it didn't matter as Manchester United advanced in a way that some would describe incredible.[2]
Manchester United and Liverpool are possible the biggest rivals at the top of English football, but this game in particular saw Liverpool as massive favourites. United were struggling at 6th in the league but looking for a Top 4 place. Meanwhile, Liverpool were in a close title race with Arsenal and, United's neighbours, Manchester City[3]. Liverpool were also looking to complete Quadruple after winning the EFL Cup.[4]
