Source (WP:NFCC#4) | Original publication: Released to the press by the author through his friend and fellow photographer Edward Grazda in New York City Immediate source: Searching for Mullah Omar, written by Grazda and published in Vanity Fair on 7 March 2007 |
Date of publication | Immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks |
Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) | Mullah Omar |
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | To illustrate Omar's appearance around the time of his rule of Afghanistan, at the top of his biographical article |
Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) |
Omar was reclusive, and this is one of only two verified portrait photographs of him in existence, neither of which is freely available. The other photo, released by the Taliban and therefore preferable under WP:NFCC#2, was taken when he was a teenager in 1978, long before he lost his right eye, and is not suitable for illustrating his appearance around the time of his rule of Afghanistan. |
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) | Use will be limited to the infobox at the top of the subject's biographical article. |
Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2) |
This was the first confirmed photograph of Mullah Omar to be released; prior to its release, the public did not know what Omar looked like. After it was released, the U.S. Government used it heavily without crediting the original author, and this is still the case in publications of the National Counterterrorism Center. That is now the credit that is almost always given when the photo is reused in the media, so much so that the photographer has effectively lost any viable commercial opportunity. |
Other information | The subject of the photograph has been deceased since: 23 April 2013 |
