DescriptionChristening of the Liberty Ship S. S. Carole Lombard 1944.jpg | Photo of the christening of the Liberty Ship S. S. Carole Lombard on January 15, 1944; this was one day short of the second anniversary of Lombard's death in a plane crash while on a publicity tour to promote the sale of Liberty Bonds. At back are Clark Gable, now an army captain and Lombard's widower and Mrs. Walter Lang (Madalynne Field), who was Lombard's secretary. Actress Irene Dunne, who was a good friend of Lombard's, christens the ship along with Louis B. Mayer, head of MGM studios. |
