Summary
DescriptionElks Lodge No. 104, 141 Pelham Street, Newport.jpg |
English: Lodge #104 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the "Hospitality Lodge",is located at 141 Pelham Street at the corner of Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island. It was built from 1879 to 1881 as "Parkgate" a summer residence for Philadelphia manufacturer Seth B. Stitt, and was designed by local architect George Champlin Mason in the Queen Anne style. It was purchased by the Elks in 1920. The property was formerly the site of the Atlantic House Hotel from 1845 to 1861, when it became the U. S. Naval Academy until 1865. The hotel tried to re-establish itself after the Civil War, but had to close, and the building was demolished in 1877. (Source: [1], [2], [3]) |
