Expeditionary Forces World War One - soldiers exercising (Morphettville Racecourse) |
|||
Description |
The soldiers are most likely from the 10th Infantry Battalion that was raised in South Australia shortly after the outbreak of WW1. It camped at Morphettville Racecourse and trained there and around the local beaches and sand dunes. The 'Flying 10th' together with battalions from other states formed the 3rd Brigade which sailed for Egypt late in 1914. Its troops were among the first to land at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. After evacuation of the Dardanelles in December 1914, the battalion went to the Western Front where it endured heavy casualties. Among its most decorated soldiers was Arthur Blackburn VC. In the background are the Temerance Hotel run by Mrs B Ferguson, and a large grocery and drapery store, probably on Bay Rd (later Anzac Highway). |
