Notes | One of the many versions of the painting created, according to Lucien Solvay (Notice sur Louis Gallait, Bruxelles 1919, p. 24), in 1851. Solvay has also suggested that the original was in Berlin collection of Louis-Frédéric-Jacques Ravené. The artist could sell it during his visit to Germany and Bohemia in 1852. Serge le Bailly de Tilleghem interprets the paintings as a moving scene in which a young, poorly clad violinist, is trying to soothe the sorrow and longing of his wife. A letter written by the artist to William Walters dated July 20, 1860 illuminates the subject of the painting also known as the Power of Music. It shows a brother and sister resting before an old tomb. The brother is attempting to comfort his sibling by playing the violin, and she has fallen into a deep sleep, "oblivious of all grief, mental and physical." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
