Porter has become the first woman to hold a chair - that of Plant Physiology - at Britain's Imperial College of Science and Technology. A Fellow of Britain's distinguished Royal Society since 1956, the twelfth woman to receive such a fellowship in the society's 300 years, Dr. Porter spent a year in the United States just after World War II studying enzymological methods at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. Born in 1899, she first became associated with the Imperial College in 1921. Picture Shows: Dr. Helen K. Porter in a laboratory of the Imperial College of Science and Technology." |
