English: War memorial for Newfoundland soldiers at Beaumont Hamel, France, during World War I. This monument of a caribou at Beaumont Hamel, France, is dedicated to the Newfoundland soldiers who lost their lives on the first day of the Battle of the Somme: July 1st, 1916. Below the caribou, which is draped in a Union Jack, stand a group of dignitaries. Included in this group are Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig (1861-1928) and French General, Marie Fayolle (1852-1928). Speaking is John R. Bennett, Colonial Secretary of Newfoundland.
The original caption with the photograph is in French and it reads: "Beaumont Hamel. Le monument élevé à la mémoire des soldats de Terre Neuve. Discours de Mr Benett. À ses côtés : Mr D.Haig, Mr Fayolle. Ph. Ch. Biard Paris." Photographs from the Haig "Official Photographs" series with French Press Stamps or of France and the French. |
