Italiano: Altro lavoro del Mariani è la medaglia in onore di Quinto Remio Palemone, ond’erano adorni, già tempo, i due musei, de’ Gualdo14 in Vicenza e del Mazzucchelli in Brescia. Il suo diametro, come appare dall’esemplare riprodotto nel Museo Mazzucchelliano, è di centimetri cinquant’uno. Il busto di Palemone, raffigurato nel diritto, ha la faccia volta a destra. I capelli e il pizzo al mento son corti e crespi, la fronte calva e il vestito una specie di stolone a ricamo. Vi corre all’ingiro la leggenda: — Q • RHEMIVS • PALAEMON • L • L • L • B • F • GRAM • VIC • ATQ • REI • – Si rappresentano nel rovescio tre pastori scalzi, in veste succinta. Due, volti a destra, stanno in piedi, l’uno con un bastone nella destra, l’altro con una specie di tromba dopo le spalle. Il terzo, di fronte, è seduto a piè d’un tronco d’albero atteggiato in modo da accompagnare con la destra, levata, le parole, ch’egli proferisce.
La leggenda, che vi è scolpita: — VENIT • ECCE • PALAEMON • — dimostra che il concetto fu desunto dall’Egloga terza di Virgilio. I due pastori in piedi sono, non v’ha dubbio, Menalca e Dameta; il seduto, Palemone, in atto di giudicare del canto dell’uno e dell’altro. Si sa che il Grammatico Vicentino, vano e presuntuoso oltre ogni dire, vantavasi, secondo Svetonio, d’aver sortito non a caso il nome di Palemone. Spacciava cioè che quel nome erasi inserito nelle Buccoliche, quale presagio de’ giudizi, ch’egli solo sarebbe stato in grado di proferire su tutti i poeti e su tutti i poemi. Io non saprei dire in quali collezioni di numismatica si custodisca oggidì la medaglia in onore di Palemone, sfuggita all’Armand. Rilevo soltanto, da un’avvertenza d’un erudito vicentino, che Giampaolo Vajenti, un patrizio pur di Vicenza, morto a mezzo il secolo XIX, ne possedeva un esemplare in bronzo, il quale io ho cercato indarno nella collezione del Museo Civico, dove per volontà del testatore dovrebbe pur conservarsi15. |
