Summary
DescriptionSans-serif italics.png |
English: Sans-serif fonts have a choice about italics. They can slant the text (minimalist, simple), which is called oblique type or they can have a true italic, as most serif fonts do, which looks a bit like handwriting.
At top is News Gothic, a sans-serif from 1908 with an oblique italic. At centre is Gothic Italic No. 124 by American Type Founders, a very eccentric design from the 1890s with a true italic, as far as I know never digitised. Its italic resembles Didone fonts of the period. At bottom is a modern humanist sans-serif, Seravek, which also has a true italic, this time slightly more calligraphic. The image of the Gothic Italic is taken from page 340 of this ATF specimen booklet from 1897, which is in the public domain. |
