He worked for several telecommunications companies, before founding <a href="/en/Celtel" title="Celtel" class="wl">Celtel</a>, which when sold had over 24 million mobile phone subscribers in 14 African countries when it was sold. After selling Celtel in 2005 for $3.4 billion, he set up the <a href="/en/Mo_Ibrahim_Foundation" title="Mo Ibrahim Foundation" class="wl">Mo Ibrahim Foundation</a> to strenghten sound governance and leadership in Africa, including through the Ibrahim Index of African Governance, which evaluates the governance performance of all 54 African countries.</p>

<p>In 2006, he initiated the <a href="/en/Mo_Ibrahim_Prize_for_Achievement_in_African_Leadership" title="Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership" class="mw-redirect wl">Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership</a>, which awards US$5 million over 10 yeras followed by US$200,00 per year therafter, to former African Executive Heads of State or Government who deliver security, health, education and economic development to their constituents and democratically transfer power to their successors. </p>

<p>According to the <a href="/en/Forbes" title="Forbes" class="wl">Forbes</a> billionaires list,<span class="mw-ref reference" id="cite_ref-3"><a href="#cite_note-3" style="counter-reset: mw-Ref 3;"><span class="mw-reflink-text">[3]</span></a></span> Ibrahim is worth US$1.2 billion, making him the 2,270th richest person in the world.
