That seems incredibly notable all by itself.
"On April 16, 2009, Madden officially announced his retirement as an NFL broadcaster after 30 years, saying "It's time."[13][14] Former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Cris Collinsworth was announced as his replacement. Madden now lives on the moon."
On which planetary mass Collinsworth makes his home, one might wonder... Someone should keep an eye on this page. Esp. as Madden's going to make headlines soon by dropping dead. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.228.6.74 (talk) 18:08, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

Does anyone know what position JM played? That'd be nice to add.
Someone claimed that John Madden is the father of twins Benji and Joel Madden, who are in the rock group Good Charlotte. This claim was repeated on Joel Madden and Benji Madden. I have reverted all 3 of these pages. Is this claim true? I can't find any sources for this. I'm also a fan of the group and I watch a lot of football, which is not definitive of course, but I've certainly never heard these claims before. Interviews with the band suggest that they knew their father and that he was a butcher and house painter before leaving the family when the boys were 16, at a time when John was coaching the Raiders. See "GC Article In November Blender Mag". Simishag 01:15, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
Although the article lists Pleasanton, CA as his home, doesn't he live in Blackhawk?

Shouldn't the quotes be moved to Wikiquote?--Dwedit 03:57, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
I clearly remember an article where John Madden said he didn't mind Caliendo's impersonation. I'm trying to find it, but my memory -- which, of course, could be wrong -- contradicts the article. Hopefully I'll find it in the next few days and I can correct the article if need be.
Why do people feel its important to mention that Frank Caliendo does an impression of him? Is that really vital information to people coming to this page looking for information about John Madden? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.68.229.247 (talk) 04:12, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I don't see any reason for Caliendo to be mentioned in Madden's article. It might be appropriate for Madden's feelings on Caliendo to be in his article, but not in this one. 151.197.127.141 (talk) 03:58, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

I've already moved the previous article "John Madden" to John Madden (disambiguation). This John Madden is far better known, and has a far more developed article, than any other person with the same name. --zenohockey 05:45, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
Someone messed with the page and changed a bunch of stuff. Someone should fix it. I would myself but I'm too lazy.
what does that mean?--TheNation 05:59, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
Removed the following question from the article. If someone has information on how Madden travelled when he was a coach we can add it to the article.
However, one wonders how Madden travelled around the country during his tenure as coach of the Raiders: did he start using a bus in the early 60's while his teams flew to the sites of their road games? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Boguslinks (talk • contribs) 01:24, 19 December 2006 (UTC).

why does it say " He was also the last color commentator for Monday Night Football before it moved to ESPN in 2006." like, he's as white as a ghost. i'm going to delete it and assume it is tomfoolery. 66.131.22.154 08:33, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
- as far as I know John has always hated to fly, even before the 60s
I propose moving this article to John Madden (American football), as nobody has any idea who "John Earl Madden" is. He's never called that. Corvus cornix 17:50, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
Why is turducken in the "see also" section of the page? Am I missing something or is this vandalism? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.230.29.202 (talk) 03:24, August 27, 2007 (UTC)
Why does this article not have a "critisism" section? Many people have through times critisized Madden for being Racist and for his many statements about how white football players should be chosen before black Why is there no mentioning of that? no matter who you are you can always be critizesed I would appreciate it if someone would look into it.

According to my research, Madden has the best winning percentage record -- better than Lombardi (though Lombardi is given that credit on this page.)
"Madden's overall record with the Raiders was 103-32-7, giving him the highest winning percentage of any NFL coach (just edging out legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, whose lifetime record was 105-35-6)" (Answers.com)
"His winning percentage (.750) is the best of any head coach in NFL history." ESPN (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/madden/story?page=bio)
"His .759 regular-season winning percentage stands as the highest ever among coaches with 100 career victories." ESPN (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/halloffame06/news/story?id=2536320) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Madscribbler (talk • contribs) 15:00, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Is he dead? 67.167.56.186 (talk) 02:28, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
Is he really dead or still alive? I want and need to know. How old is he? If he is dead how old would he be if he was alive? People should keep this page updated so when you want or need to know something you will know. Why doesn`t the artical give a death date and all that information? This whole wikipedia thing doesn`t make much scence. All good recources (besides a book) keep you updated to know what is going on around you and all the info. that you need. I am starting to think this is a bad recource. Nobody keeps you updated and I don`t have all the info. that I need. I might only be 10 years old, but I am a very smart one. Working on state reports witch are due on Thanksgiving. I sure am a smart 5th grader.24.118.173.196 (talk) 00:55, 8 November 2010 (UTC)24.118.173.196 (talk) 00:50, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

There is a section in the Infobox labeled "Career Stats" which has a win-loss record, winning %, and number of games. Can this somehow be clarified to say it's his COACHING career (as opposed to his playing career)? I'm not too familiar with infobox templates, or I'd do it myself. -Sme3 (talk) 00:48, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

At the beginning of the article, it says JM has been married to Mary Fields since Dec. 26th 1959. Later in the article, his wife's name is Virginia. Did he get a divorce? Did Mary change her name to Virginia?
There was some stray formatting that is causing this talkpage not to display correctly. I think I got it all but we shall see. Please remember to sign all your posts with four tildes ~~~~ --Morenooso (talk) 16:53, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

In the last two days, two separate accounts (BigShow1208 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) (diff) and Belly cats (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) (diff) have added material to the John Madden (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) article which claimed the subject had died. The circumstances described were clearly intended to be jokes, but the first account had added such jokes to the same namespace before (diff). I've applied warning templates to both users' talk pages, specifically mentioning the potentially serious situation surrounding reporting the death of a living person on a BLP. It's entirely possible this is the same person operating under two usernames. There's insufficient activity to ask for page protection or BLP/N attention. In any case, I feel the need to document it here in the unlikely event this becomes an issue. BusterD (talk) 00:12, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

This is a statement by Roger Goodell. I would like to copy it in as a quote box template, but I'm not sure how much of it is appropriate to copy in, and I also don't want to risk a copyvio. Skarmory (talk • contribs) 00:48, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
Unexpectedly? He was 85, I don't feel like that was unexpected? Either way, feels like editorializing. LJ (talk) 00:57, 29 December 2021 (UTC) Update: I found the page that said it was "unexpected" but it's a USA Today blog-type article, so my point stands. https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/john-madden-passes-away-at-85-nfl-world-reacts
Update to the update: I guess the original wording from the NFL press release uses that language. I'm fine with it if someone wants to put it back in. LJ (talk) 01:04, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
People will say a death is unexpected because it came without warning, like deaths usually do, but the man was elderly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gotnext85 (talk • contribs) 08:27, 29 December 2021 (UTC)

article erroneously states that the loss to the steelers via the immaculate reception took place in the afc championship game. it was however the afc divisional round. 207.255.86.101 (talk) 00:15, 22 January 2022 (UTC)
What did madden die from? Was it the family that chose not to reveal his cause of death or is it really true that even they don’t know what he died from? I’m very confused. 2601:440:8680:7130:B96D:8F36:1855:C57 (talk) 13:18, 12 February 2022 (UTC)

In the win percentage column for the regular season, the average is given as 0.7529. This appears to have been done by summing the percentages in each row, then dividing them by number of seasons. However, the number of games vary depending on the season, so this gives an incorrect win percentage. From what I can see, win percentage is based on total wins out of total games. 103/142 gives a win percentage of 0.72535211 (standard rounding to 4dp would be 0.7254). Weirdly, the postseason percentage appears to be correct.
The wiki mirrors the source page information.
As a sidenote, the percentages aren't given as percentage values either. Weatherbeatenhollowsofsnow (talk) 00:22, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
