According to the article, “…elements of this (emotional) detachment were derived from the philosophical work of Arthur Schopenhauer.” Exactly how? At the time, art was the skillful representation of objects. Schopenhauer’s aesthetics discussed the benefit of enjoying the skilled representation itself without being attached to the object that was artistically represented. Schopenhauer’s ethics discussed the benefit of renouncing and withdrawing from a world filled with pain and suffering. Both discussions of detachment also strongly influenced the later Symbolists.
