The sign is used in cartography as a symbol for a village and represents eight fields around a village square.
In who's conventions? I've seen maps from several countries and never seen # used to indicate a village
- sharp
- as in music manuscripts
The sharp sign looks only superficially like a #
++++++ So, octothorp was the ansi standard name for this symbol, why did whomever specified unicode pick a different name? -- Geo Swan 01:11, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)
