The Mosquito Fire is an active wildfire burning near the community of Foresthill in the Tahoe National Forest in Placer County, California, as part of the 2022 California wildfire season. The fire began at approximately 6:22 PM PDT near Mosquito Ridge Road (for which it was named), above Oxbow Reservoir in the Middle Fork American River drainage on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. As of September 7, 2022, the Mosquito Fire has burned 1,203 acres (487 hectares) and is 0% contained.[1]

When the Mosquito Fire ignited, the Foresthill area (like much of the state of California at that time) was experiencing a historically intense heatwave. The fire was also influenced by wind gusts from the outflow boundaries of passing thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada.
The Mosquito Fire has caused evacuation warnings and orders in Placer and El Dorado counties. The communities of Michigan Bluff and Foresthill in Placer County are under an evacuation order, as is the community of Volcanoville in El Dorado County.[1]
