EastEnders is a British soap opera, examining the domestic and professional lives of working class people who live in the fictitious London Borough of Walford in the East End of London. The show airs on BBC One and entered its 32nd broadcasted year on 1 January 2017 with episode number 5415, with Sean O'Connor continuing his role as executive producer until June 2017 when John Yorke took over as his temporary replacement. In the typical week, EastEnders airs four half-hour episodes in a time slot of 8.00 pm on Mondays and Fridays, and 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There were 209 episodes shown in in 2017.

Storylines in 2017 included the deaths of Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack) and Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons); a bus crash on the market that put several lives in danger; a sexting, revenge porn and bullying storyline involving Bex Fowler (Jasmine Armfield), Shakil Kazemi (Shaheen Jafargholi), Louise Mitchell (Tilly Keeper), Keegan Baker (Zack Morris), Alexandra D'Costa (Sydney Craven) and Madison Drake (Seraphina Beh), which eventually leads to Louise being burnt by Alexandra and Madison, leaving her with severe scarring; Michelle Fowler's (Jenna Russell) relationship with seventeen-year-old Preston Cooper (Martin Anzor), who also began a relationship with Bex; the Carter family's money struggles; Steven Beale (Aaron Sidwell) falsely claiming to have a terminal brain tumour; Sylvie Carter's (Linda Marlowe) dementia and death; Denise being unable to support herself financially after losing her job and needing to visit a food bank; and Bernadette Taylor's (Clair Norris) teenage pregnancy .
New regular cast members introduced in 2017 included Morris, Beh, Craven, Alex James-Phelps (Travis Law-Hughes), Cerith Flinn (Gethin Pryce), Simon Williams (Hugo Browning), Eddie Eyre (Josh Hemmings), Lee Ryan (Woody Woodward), Timothy, Maggie Steed (Joyce Murray), Casey, Lorraine Stanley (Karen Taylor), Danny Walters (Keanu Taylor), Norris, Pernille Broch (Ingrid Solberg), and Patrick Bergin (Aidan Maguire). Although Fi Browning, played by Lisa Faulkner, was introduced as a new character, her identity was later revealed to be that of Sophie Willmott-Brown, a character who first appeared as a child in 1987. New recurring cast members included Tom Jacobs (Riley Taylor) and Alfie Jacobs (Chatham Taylor), while new guest cast in 2017 included Doña Croll (Emerald Fox), Anzor, Piotr Baumann (Konrad Topolski) and Hannah Spearritt (Kandice Taylor). Departing regular cast included Womack, Simons, Annette Badland (Babe Smith), Danny-Boy Hatchard (Lee Carter), Marlowe, Sidwell and Brett. Beh, Craven, James-Phelps, Casey and Flinn also left at the end of their respective storylines. Returning cast members in 2017 included Dean Gaffney (Robbie Jackson) William Boyde (James Willmott-Brown) on a regular basis and Angela Wynter (Yolande Trueman), Ann Mitchell (Cora Cross), Declan Bennett (Charlie Cotton), Lucy Benjamin (Lisa Fowler) and Dave Hill (Bert Atkinson) on a recurring or guest basis.
