Vushtrri is an antique locality dating since the time of Illyrian Empire, respectively the Kingdom of Dardania who lived in the territory of Kosovo in the 4th century BC. The Illyrian name of Vushtrri was Viciana which means “The side of calves” (Ana e Viqave).[citation needed] When the Roman Empire invaded the Kingdom of Dardania in the 1st century BC, the Romans added the Latin suffix ‘um’ to the name of Viciana, and therefore it became Vicianum. In the documents of Ottoman Empire, who invaded Albanian territories in the 14th century, we find the name of Vushtrri as Viҫitrine, that has a meaning of “Calves’ fence” (Trina e viҫave). Most Serbian sources call the city Vučitrn. According to Mirjana Detelić, the name of the city, Vučitrn, means "wolf's thorn", a spiny restharrow plant, in Serbian.[2] Nowadays, the Albanian name for the city is Vushtrri.
The cultural and historic monuments left as the city’s heritage are the main characteristics of the city. The Castle, Stone Bridge, Public Bath and Cesme build centuries ago are the biggest attractions of the city.
Vushtrri is an important economic centre, mostly known as the biggest producer of potato in Kosovo. Known as the centre of many factories and important companies of Kosovo, such as: Vipa, GalvaSteel Llamkos, Binni, Berto etc.
In the centre of Vushtrri 25 km northwest of Prishtina, it is located the Kosovo Academy for Public Safety (KAPS) established on September 2006. Initially it is called Police Service School, but from the end of the year 2011 by the approval of Law, gets the name of Kosovo Academy for Public Safety (KAPS). KAPS as an executive agency of Ministry of Internal Affairs provides basic and specialized training for the Kosovo Police, Kosovo Correctional Service, Kosovo Customs, Emergency Management Agency as well to other public safety agencies. During the year at KAPS are trained from 12,000 to 13,000 public safety officers in basic, advanced and specialized training. KAPS Vision is to prepare and further develop staffs for maintaining order and security that are able to offer professional and quality service and win the full confidence of the public.[3]
