Industrial and Production Engineering,(IPE) is a combination of industrial engineering and production engineering. It is a branch of engineering concerned with the development, improvement, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment, energy, materials and processes. Manufacturing engineering also overlaps substantially with production engineering and industrial engineering. The names are often interchangeable with these branches.
The history can trace back to 1700s, during the Industrial Revolution. Modern study and application developes the fields of automation and robotics. There are several subdislines including Mechanics, Kinematics, Drafting, Mehatronics and Textile. Colleges offer diverse degrees at the bachelor, masters, and doctoral level. In Asia, many universities provide Bachelor, Masters, and PhD degrees in IPE, but in other parts of the world, Industrial Engineering and Production Engineering are taught separately.
The total number of engineers employed in the US in 2015 was roughly 1.6 million. Of these, 272,470 were industrial engineers or related branches (16.92%), the third most popular engineering specialty. Manufacturing company and service often provides enterprise to implement this concept of engineering and principles of management science. Examples of major companies that employ manufacturing engineers in the United States include General Motors Corporation, Ford Motor Company, Chrysler, Boeing, Gates Corporation and Pfizer. Examples in Europe include Airbus, Daimler, BMW, Fiat, Navistar International, and Michelin Tyre.
