In Polstead, Suffolk, England in 1827, a young woman, Maria Marten was murdered. Her body was found buried in a barn with a half red clay-tiled roof on the property of William Corder, the man she had planned to marry. In April of 1828 Ann Marten, the step mother of Maria, purportedly made the claim that Maria had come to her in dreams and told her that she had been murdered and that her body was buried in The Red Barn. Ann had made this claim to her husband Thomas Marten, Maria's father, who discovered the body and contacted the police.
Evidence found at the scene by the police linked William Corder to the muder. William was subsequently arrested, convicted and publicly executed in August of 1828.
The story gained notoriety as Ann Marten's claim of a dream spread. It is this version of events that has continued on and led to the creation of songs, plays and movies.
