Storm of the month
Cyclone Fanele was the first cyclone of tropical cyclone status to strike western Madagascar since Cyclone Fame one year prior. It formed on January 18 in the Mozambique Channel, and rapidly organized, reaching peak winds of 185 km/h (115 mph). It weakened before moving ashore in Menabe Region southwest of Morondava, and rapidly deteriorated over land. Fanele briefly re-intensified after reaching open waters, only to become an extratropical cyclone by January 23. The cyclone caused heavy damage near where it moved ashore and along its path, resulting in at least eight deaths. Fanele struck Madagascar just two days after Tropical Storm Eric brushed the northeastern portion of the country. The two storms affected over 50,000 people, of which at least 4,000 were left homeless. Fanele struck the country during a series of government protests, and consequentially relief efforts were hindered.

Project News
The project reached a milestone in the last two months in terms of article quality for all articles within the project. For the first time, the percentage of Good articles or better reached more than 1/3, and at the same time, the percentage of Start or Stub articles totaled less than 50%. In the previous twelve months, the overall project grew by 262 articles, of which 204, or 78%, were GA or better. Additionally, in terms of only storm articles, the project now has 46.6% of its articles as GA or better, and only 1/3 are Start or Stub. Unfortunately, much of that is due to newly-created articles easily attaining GA status. For storm articles, the total number of Start or Stub articles, currently 226, is about the same as it was a year ago. The lack of work on older articles is especially noticeable on season articles, where more than 75% of articles are still Stub or Start.
In an attempt to improve articles, there is talk of forming a collaboration between a few Wikipedians. The current project is to improve Hurricane Camille to FA status in time for its 40th anniversary this August. There is still plenty of work to be done, so if you're interested, any help would be appreciated.
Additionally, there is a recent discussion on the WPTC talk page about establishing a notability criteria. There was talk in the past of instating one, although this time the proposal is backed up by interpretations of existing Wikipedia policy. The proposal would limit articles to tropical cyclones that have at least one independent, reliable source other than any warning centers. Excluding cross-basin, off-season, or 64+ knot cyclones, the proposal would affect 26 articles, none of which affected land or lasted for an appreciable amount of time.

Storm of the month Hamish indirectly caused a major environmental disaster along the Queensland coastline, when strong waves from the cyclone damaged the hull of a cargo ship, spilling 260 tonnes of fuel and oil into the ocean. The oil washed onto the coastline, endangering the environment prompting a costly cleanup. Offshore, the fishermen went missing after the boat was lost; one person was found, although the other two remained missing and were presumed dead. As the storm remained offshore, overall damage directly from the storm was minor, primarily from strong waves. Other tropical cyclone activity

Project News As part of the above discussion, there is a request for all active members to sign a list to affirm they are still active members in the project. If you don't sign the list, or if you don't consider yourself active anymore, your name will be placed on the inactive members list on May 1st. Hurricanehink has organised a challenge to try and improve some of the Tropical cyclone articles. The rules are that you must take either an seasonal or a storm article from one of the eight basins we have, that is either a Stub, Start class or a brand new article and improve it to at least GA status. However to avoid several articles on cyclones that did not affect land, Hurricanehink has limited the challenge to storms/seasonal articles of Mid-importance or higher. Their is an exception to this rule for the Central Pacific as Cyclones rarely form in this basin. - For full details of the challenge see the Project's Talkpage Project member list |

In reviewing your edits I don't see experience in admin related areas. This is not an automatic disqualifier because of your article building and because you seem like a civil, even tempered user who is able to discuss differences of opinion and who is not prone to flying off the handle. Before allowing your RFA to go forward, you might want to review the Wikipedia:Administrators' reading list and look at some of the RFA questions in the RFA's currently extant. This will help you gauge your knowledge base against the expectations of the community. Also, don't be afraid to reach out to other editors for advice, guidance and information. I assume you are still editing this page, and I notice no information about Ike's damage to the Bahamian island of Inagua, which received a direct hit, is included.
Can such information be added? Possible reference points include

I also notice that the NHC Tropical Cyclone Report has some details about damage to the Bahamian island of INAGUA.
The flattened pics of Cyclone Bijli aren't showing on the main 2009 North Indian ocean season page, or the Bijli main article, it might be a good idea to just simply re-add the original pic. Hurricanekiller1994 (talk) 23:37, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Where did you get the IMD info for the Timeline of the 1999 North Indian ocean cyclone season?
We, the class from the UWEC are studying weather, autism, drought, nature, science and human-related subjects. Unfortunately, the impact section of Hurricane Georges was edited dubiously, filled with too much questionable editing and terrible grammar. Before printing this article out, our class would like to say that the article needs to get redesigned, but we contacted you because the cleanup of Hurricane Georges' impact section would be too complex/complicated for us here.

Thanks for updating the article called Typhoon Cham-hom (2009. I read the message that you posted on this article's history. It was very confusing for me when I read the part where it said that Malaysia was affected, because how can a country be affected by a storm if it did not even reach it, only affecting the islands off shore of that country. But what you posted makes sence to me now so, thank you! 72.197.236.20 (talk) 22:35, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi. Just so you know, I took all the storms from 1970-2008, sorted them by category, found the average pressure and then the standard deviation myself. Sorry that I didn't really make that clear when I was putting them in the SSHS article, and I can't really cite myself as a source, so you can add them back or leave them out, whichever you want. Just wanted to let you know that I didn't pull them out from nowhere. 96.30.150.26 (talk) 22:58, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Could you please clarify the issue that you use sometimes 1-minute and sometimes 3-minute sustained winds in the small infoboxes. The introduction to the article suggests implicitely that back in 1998 the IMD did not publish windspeeds (at least I understood that this way and others might do the same), so giving 3-minute wind speeds there seems to be either a mistake or they're at least unsourced. Otherwise you wrote a good season article, which includes some more than the notorius "the storm did that and then moved there and was upgraded then downgraded as it moved again" like in the Pacific typhoon season article 2007. ;-) --Matthiasb (talk) 10:54, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

I noticed Camille is not on the list. Why is this so? Did it have an realistically high spike in activity during April or May? Thegreatdr (talk) 15:40, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I would need the original data in order to construct the maps. They're not just tracing of SMN maps. Even if I did, Marco's map would likely not cover such a large area of Mexico. Thegreatdr (talk) 18:55, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I installed Mac Ports before installing the program. Just follow the instructions because you will need to install X11 (which comes with your computer) and the development tools. After that you might need to install some other packages, which you can conveniently do with Mac Ports (formerly called Darwin Ports). Gettext was the only one I remember installing. Some of the other stuff you need might come with this package, but check if you're missing anything and use Mac Ports to obtain it. Follow the instructions for the Track Map generator and it should work. If you use Mac Ports you can easily remove all of this. Potapych (talk) 04:02, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

I've got a few sources for you. Just send me an email and I'll send them over. I'm afraid that there's not terribly much on the impact in Mexico that I can find in the English language press. On the other hand, there are some pretty good-looking Spanish-language sources (from the Mexican papers). If you speak Spanish, I'll gladly send the most promising looking ones over to you. How do you do that IRC thing like yesterdays Book throwing crap and others? Darren23 (Contribs) 16:41, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
I noticed you added a bunch of data from JMA into the infoboxes. This discussion settled the issue that the project would use JTWC data in years prior to 2000. I guess you could add 10-min winds (though I don't like how the template displays them) but you shouldn't replace any of the pressures with JMA ones. That makes it too confusing. Potapych (talk) 01:31, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
If you have any spare time, could you make track maps for Tropical Depressions of 1974? The data is here: and the storm numbers are in the season article.
I cant get on IRC so i thought id let ya know i did a bit of work on the table in 04/05 spac - GP has next to nothing for 16F so i will have to look through the MT archive and find it though GP gives us a clue with it being absorbed by Shelia apparently.
