---|---|
You are invited to join us at the "picnic anyone can edit" in the lovely Southpoint Park on Roosevelt Island, as part of the Great American Wiknic celebrations being held across the USA. Remember it's a wiki-picnic, which means potluck. This year the Wiknic will double as a "Strategy Salon" (more information at Wiknic page), using open space technology to address major questions facing our social movement.
Celebrate our 13th year of wiki-picnics! We hope to see you there! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Wikimedia New York City Team 21:36, 6 July 2019 (UTC) |

On 7 July 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article WTC Cortlandt station, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the WTC Cortlandt subway station in New York City, closed for 17 years after the September 11 attacks, cost $181 million to rebuild? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, WTC Cortlandt station), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Brooklyn Bridge, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Park Row (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver).

Hi Epicgenius, I've removed the citation of businesstelegraph.co.uk that you added to Star Wars Hotel (in Special:Diff/872923002) because the linked page is a copyright violation of the Screen Rant article. The businesstelegraph.co.uk domain appears to be a collection of scraped articles from other publications, and we should avoid linking to that domain per WP:ELNEVER. Please see WP:RSN § businesstelegraph.co.uk for details. Thanks. — Newslinger talk 00:51, 12 July 2019 (UTC)

Welcome back to the Editing newsletter.
Since the last newsletter, the team has released two new features for the mobile visual editor and has started developing three more. All of this work is part of the team's goal to make editing on mobile web simpler.
Before talking about the team's recent releases, we have a question for you:
Are you willing to try a new way to add and change links?
If you are interested, we would value your input! You can try this new link tool in the mobile visual editor on a separate wiki.
Follow these instructions and share your experience:
The mobile visual editor is a simpler editing tool, for smartphones and tablets using the mobile site. The Editing team has recently launched two new features to improve the mobile visual editor:
Section editing and the new loading overlay are now available to everyone using the mobile visual editor.
This is a list of our most active projects. Watch these pages to learn about project updates and to share your input on new designs, prototypes and research findings.
The VisualEditor on mobile is a good place to learn more about the projects we are working on. The team wants to talk with you about anything related to editing. If you have something to say or ask, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

Wouldn't it be easier to say "Cross street..." rather then use the directions, which really don't tell the reader much unless they're already familiar with the grid? Beyond My Ken (talk) 23:54, 17 July 2019 (UTC)

Welcome to the ninth newsletter from the Growth team!
The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.
The Growth team has existed for about one year. During that time, we have developed several features that we think can help increase retention. Though we are still gathering data to detect scientifically whether the features increase retention, we think that some of the features are ready to be deployed on more wikis that want to experiment with them. If your community is enthusiastic about welcoming newcomers, we encourage you to contact us so that we can verify together if your wiki is eligible.
Then, go through the checklist to start the process of getting these features:

The article PATH (rail system) you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:PATH (rail system) for issues which need to be addressed. On 25 July 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article JFK Express, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that the JFK Express subway service in New York City never actually went to JFK Airport? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/JFK Express. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

The article PATH (rail system) you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:PATH (rail system) for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. A long time coming ... I don't know if there have been any other articles that waited over a year to make GA; actually I wouldn't be surprised if there had been but not in my admittedly limited experience.
I feel invested in it now enough to put it on my watchlist; that will at least give us one more eye that can revert vandalism quickly when it happens.
Are you planning to nominate it for FA at some point? I will see about getting a picture of the Harrison yard somehow if I can, like I said.
I've also been thinking it would, indeed, be a very good idea to have a Wikivoyage page. I haven't done a lot of work there in a few years; maybe it's time I did again. I would also be happy to create an article on that Supreme Court case (US Trust Co. of New York v. New Jersey) so it won't be a red link that would be problematic in an FA discussion; again I haven't created a SCOTUS case article in quite some time but that doesn't mean I'm never doing it again.
I've also been moved to look at the articles in other languages; I've been moved to expand the intro of the French article so it has the same information as the English intro (more or less). Perhaps eventually I could translate the whole article (Have you ever looked at the Mandarin article? I don't know if you edit there; I didn't see your name in the history. But I suppose you might want to look at it if you haven't).
At some point I can get started on the Wikivoyage page ... what we'd probably want is an image that could make a good page banner there when cropped appropriately. I'll have to take a look. Daniel Case (talk) 19:29, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

I'm hoping to get my hands on a copy of the latest 4th edition of Guide to New York City Landmarks to properly fill out the list; unfortunately looks like you can't check it out from NYPL so I've got to schedule some time to sit down at the branch. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs talk 18:10, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
epicgenius, I was wondering whether you could stop by this DYK nomination that you reviewed and check the recently submitted ALT hooks—though you approved the nomination, you asked for some other hooks, and they have been provided. It would be best if someone checked them out. If you do like one or more of them, please add your comment (and a new tick) below them; if any are problematic (while sources have been provided, the facts do need to be in the article itself), please strike them and note why. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:01, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
