- There is, in fact, a way to add stuff to the end of talk pages instead of editing the whole thing. At the top of every talk page (both article talk pages and user talk pages, like this one) is a little plus sign just to the right of the "edit this page" link. It takes you to a page where you can append text to the end instead of editing the whole page.
- As far as units go, I don't know much about what's preferred, but I don't think there's a way to automatically change them. I did find three links that might help you: these are the guidelines on units in scientific articles. These are the guidelines in general. This is a discussion among Wikipedia users about units.
