The 1972–73 season was Manchester City's 71st season of competitive football and 53rd season in the top division of English football.[1] In addition to the First Division, the club competed in the FA Cup, Football League Cup, FA Charity Shield and the UEFA Cup. Despite not winning the FA Cup or First Division the previous season, City were invited to play in the Charity Shield against Aston Villa, the 1971/72 Third Division champions, at Villa Park. City won the match 1-0 with a Francis Lee penalty late on.
