Perspective

Hòa Minzy is an artist from Bac Ninh and has been nurturing the project "Bac Bling" since early to mid-2023.[1] In this project, she chose to collaborate with fellow musician Tuan Cry and producer Masew to compose and produce the song. Previously, Hoa Minzy had collaborated with Tuan Cry on the song "Ken ca chon canh" (2024).[2] Tuan Cry composed "Bac Bling" in about a week.[3] After that, he sent the demo to Hoa Minzy and the female singer was immediately satisfied, immediately coming up with the next theme idea.[2] The name "Bac Bling" is a combination of "Bac Ninh" and "Bling", slang for sparkling and shining.[4]

Following Tuan Cry's instructions,[2] Hoa Minzy contacted comedian Xuan Hinh to invite him to contribute his voice and act in the MV. Xuan Hinh accepted Hoa Minzy's invitation after hearing the idea and participating in the rap part of "Bac Bling".[5] Regarding this, Hoa Minzy said "uncle [Xuan Hinh] is also a son of Bac Ninh. I think I have to invite [him] for the project to be truly meaningful and become more wonderful."[6] Xuan Hinh affirmed that rap is not a problem for him because this performance style has appeared in bai choi, quan ho and cheo from previous centuries through rhyming, vibrato and rhythm. Xuan Hinh said that his performance of rap is not a breakthrough but rather bringing traditional art into the new era.[7] In addition, Hoa Minzy also went directly to the concert Anh trai vuot ngan chong gai to invite another artist from Bac Ninh, Tu Long, to participate in the project "Bac Bling", but he refused due to being busy.[8]

Perspective

"Bac Bling" is a traditional folk song combined with modern electronic hip hop style.[9][10] Masew produced the song using many traditional instruments such as the moon lute, flute, two-string fiddle, drums, but arranged in a new style with a fast tempo.[11] In addition to quan ho, the song also incorporates typical Northern singing genres such as xam and cheo.[12] Part of the lyrics of "Bac Bling" were inspired by quan ho verses in the songs "Ăn một miếng trầu" and "Người ở đừng về".[13]

The intro of "Bac Bling" has the sound of drums and trumpets, along with four lines of Xuan Hinh: "Ta về ta tắm ao ta, dù trong dù đục ao nhà vẫn hơn / Tình quê son sắt keo sơn, hương đồng gió nội cây rơm đợi chờ".[14] Next is the tourism promotion: "Mời anh về Bắc Ninh em chơi thăm. Lễ hội nô nức đông vui quanh năm. Qua đền Bà Chúa cầu lộc cầu tài.".[15] Hoa Minzy starts singing after the fast music with a fast rhythm. After that, she performs the lyrics in a high-pitched voice with a strong Quan Ho character.[16] Many rhyming lines appear throughout "Bac Bling" such as "Mời anh về Bắc Ninh em chơi thăm, lễ hội nô nức đông vui quanh năm", "Bắc Ninh vốn trọng chữ tình/ Nón quai thao em đợi ở sân đình",[17] in which the raps of Xuan Hinh and Tuan Cry constantly mention Quan Ho such as "nón quai thao em đợi ở sân đình", "tấm lòng son sắt, ta ngân nga câu quan họ", "sáng như đêm trăng rằm hội Lim".[18]
