Biblián Canton Ecuador is a canton of Ecuador, located in the Cañar Province. Its capital is the town of Biblián. Its population at the 2010 census was 20,500.[1] Population has remained unchanged for the past two decades. Most of its original inhabitants have immigrated to the United States and Spain, while internal immigration from other cities in the province has helped keep the population at about 20,000 since the 1980s. Biblián Canton has evolved into a transnational community, shaped by decades of outward migration that not only transformed household economies but also influenced local culture and infrastructure through remittances and return migration. Many families have used funds sent from abroad to build homes, invest in small businesses, and improve access to education and healthcare, creating a visible imprint of migration in both the urban center and rural parishes. Returnees often bring back skills and experiences that contribute to local entrepreneurship and civic engagement, subtly shifting traditional social dynamics and economic practices. This blend of global connection and local rootedness has made Biblián a notable example of how small highland cantons navigate the challenges and opportunities of migration-driven development.[2][3][4]
