DENSO Corporation (株式会社デンソー, Kabushiki-Gaisha Densō) is a global automotive components manufacturer headquartered in Kariya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. For the fiscal year ending March 2025, DENSO reported consolidated revenue of about ¥7,161.8 billion (US$47.9 billion) and employed approximately 170,000 people worldwide.[1] It is listed as one of the Fortune Global 500 companies and is also a constituent of the Nikkei 225, TOPIX Large70, and JPX Nikkei Index 400.[2]

Overview and History
Founded in 1949 as Nippon Denso Co., Ltd. (日本電装株式会社, Nippon Densō Kabushiki-Gaisha) after being spun off from Toyota Motor Corporation. Since 2009, DENSO has been the largest automotive parts supplier in Japan and the second largest globally after Bosch.[3]
DENSO operates in 36 countries and maintains R&D centers across major continents. The company has engaged in international collaborations, including projects with MIT (AgeLab consortium on driver distraction).[4]
At the bottom line, as of 2024, Toyota Motor Corporation holds about 20.9% of DENSO’s outstanding shares.[5]

QR Code Innovation
DENSO Wave, a subsidiary, invented the QR Code in 1994.[6] Originally developed for automotive part tracking, it was released under an open license, enabling worldwide adoption in logistics, commerce, payments, and healthcare. The QR Code is a registered trademark of DENSO Wave.
Products and Business Fields
DENSO develops a wide range of automotive systems:
- Thermal systems (air conditioning, heat pumps, refrigerant systems)
- Powertrain systems (sensors, ECUs, fuel injection, ignition, common rail systems)

DENSO is a leader in power semiconductors (SiC devices) and invests heavily in this field:
- 2023: introduced its first SiC inverter for eAxle modules.[10]
- Collaboration with Kyoto University startup FLOSFIA for next-generation devices.[11]
- Partnership with USJC for 300 mm wafer production.[12]
- Joint investment with Fuji Electric to expand SiC production.[13]
DENSO established an IC research lab in 1968 and today holds a large portfolio of patents in sensors, microcontrollers, and power devices.[14]

Technological Innovation
Motorsports
DENSO actively supports Toyota Gazoo Racing and other teams by supplying high-performance ECUs, ignition systems, fuel pumps, and sensors. Its technologies have been used in Formula One (2002–2009), Super GT, Super Formula, and the World Endurance Championship (WEC). In the 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Toyota TS030 Hybrid with a DENSO energy recovery system finished second overall.[19]
