Gilmer first auditioned for America's Got Talent, and later appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show as a guest.[3][7] During his appearance, Tyler Perry visited and revealed that he had teamed up with Nickelodeon to create a comedy series starring Gilmer, being Tyler Perry's Young Dylan. He had also appeared on All That as the musical guest prior to the show's premiere.[8]
