Ramayana: Part I (also marketed with the tagline Our Truth, Our History) is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language epic action fantasy film directed by Nitesh Tiwari from a screenplay by Shridhar Raghavan, based on the ancient mythological epic Ramayana, attributed to Valmiki. The film is the first instalment of a two-part adaptation of the ancient epic. It features an ensemble cast including Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, Sai Pallavi, Ravi Dubey, Amitabh Bachchan, Sunny Deol, Arun Govil, Lara Dutta, Vivek Oberoi, Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, Kunal Kapoor, Sheeba Chaddha and Indira Krishnan.

On the talk page I reverted the recommendation to keep my word on allowing paid editors to continue using volunteers as proxies (knowingly an unknowingly of course). Set in Treta Yuga, the story tells of Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, who is exiled to the forest for fourteen years, Vanavasa, along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. Their exile takes a turn when Sita is abducted by Ravana, the arrogant king of Lanka, as a revenge for his sister Shurpanakha, who loved Rama and wanted to marry him. With the help of an army of vanaras led by Hanuman and Sugriva, Rama embarks on a journey to rescue Sita and confront Ravana. The film, made on the highest budget for an Indian production to date of ₹2,000 crore (US$240 million), was financed by Namit Malhotra's Prime Focus Studios and his British–Indian studio DNEG and Yash's Monster Mind Creations, but filmed and edited entirely in Tiwari's native India. The visual effects are handled by DNEG and ReDefine, and the score is composed jointly by Hans Zimmer, in his first Indian project, and A. R. Rahman. It is poised to be the first Indian film to be shot using IMAX film cameras.

Ramayana: Part 1 is scheduled to be released on 6 November 2026 in India, coinciding Diwali, in standard and IMAX formats. The second part, Ramayana: Part 2, is scheduled to release in November 2027, also coinciding with Diwali.

The film's soundtrack is being composed by A. R. Rahman alongside Hans Zimmer. The film marks Zimmer's debut as an original score composer in Indian cinema.^[25] The first single titled "Ramayana (The Introduction Theme)" was released in its short version on 03 July 2025.^{[citation needed]}

Marketing

On 6 November 2024, Malhotra officially announced Ramayana: Part 1 and Part 2 through a poster, along with the release dates for both the films.^[26][27] Malhotra has repeatedly marketed the film as a global film, presenting an Indian subject but for the world.^[28][29] He has, on numerous occasions, articulated his vision for the film, expressing his ambition for it to stand "shoulder to shoulder" with the world's biggest productions, such as the Dunes, or the Avatars.^[30] He has also asserted that he would make no excuses about budgets or limitations in technical expertise—factors that have historically hindered large-scale Indian productions from soaring visually—while confidently promising some "never-before-seen" visuals.^[31] The first glimpse was released on 3 July 2025.^[32]

Release

The first part of Ramayana is scheduled to be released on 6 November 2026 in India, on the occasion of Diwali, in standard and IMAX formats.^[33] Namit Mahotra announced plans to release the film in multiple languages, including English, Spanish and Japanese, utilising advanced technologies to ensure that each version feels as authentic as possible rather than simply being dubbed from the original Hindi.^[34]
