The Institute of Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is a research institution located in Lviv that is engaged in the comprehensive study of traditional and contemporary Ukrainian culture. Its main areas of research include ethnology, folklore studies, art history, and social anthropology.

History

The history of the institution began in Lviv in 1951 with the formation of the Ukrainian State Museum of Ethnography and Artistic Crafts. Later, in 1982, the institution was transformed into the Lviv branch of the Rylsky Institute of Art Studies, Folklore and Ethnology. In 1992, the institution received its current name.

As of 2020, the Institute had 148 employees, including 81 researchers (9 doctors and 62 candidates of sciences), as well as one academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The Institute's research covers current issues of traditional and professional culture of Ukrainians, particularly in the diaspora, ethnogenesis and ethnic history of the population of the Ukrainian Carpathians, as well as gender studies, social mobility, and artistic processes.

The Institute's book and archive fund consists of over 90,000 items.

The Institute publishes in-depth scientific works, including regional monographs ("Boikivshchyna", "Hutsulshchyna") and encyclopedic publications ("Mala entsyklopediia ukrainskoho narodoznavstva", "Ukrainska folkloristychna entsyklopediia").

Narodoznavchi Zoshyty

From 1995, the Institute has been publishing a scientific bimonthly journal entitled "Narodoznavchi Zoshyty". This is a key periodical publication featuring analytical and research materials on ethnology, art history, folk art, folklore studies, and museology. The journal contains conference materials, special issues, and research by international scholars. The editor-in-chief is Stepan Pavliuk. The executive secretary is Roman Yatsiv.
