Long Day's Journey Into Night is a 2025 drama film written by David Lindsay-Abaire, directed by Jonathan Kent, and starring Jessica Lange, Ed Harris, Ben Foster and Colin Morgan.[1] It is Kent's feature directorial debut and based on Eugene O'Neill's play of the same name.[2][3]

Premise
Over the course of a day, a married couple, Mary and James Tyrone, and their two sons, Jamie and Edmund, grapple with Mary's morphine addiction and confront each other over the past in a series of emotionally tense and volatile exchanges.

Production
Filming began in Ireland in September 2022.[5] Filming specifically occurred in County Wicklow.[2] In November 2022, it was announced that filming had wrapped and that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer had acquired the sales rights.[2] Lange confirmed in a May 2024 interview with People that the film was "finally finished."[4] In February 2025, Blue Fox Entertainment acquired international sales rights to the film, which will be shopped for buyers at the European Film Market, while UTA Independent Film Group handles North American rights.[6]
Release
Long Day's Journey into Night premiered at the Dublin Film Festival on February 27, 2025.[7]
Reception
Ross McIndoe of Slant Magazine awarded the film three stars out of four.[8]
Nikki Baughan of Screen International gave the film a positive review and wrote, “The cast and material alone are sufficient to attract upscale audiences, but this is a strong adaptation in and of itself.”[9]
