James Irwin Charter Schools

James Irwin Charter Schools (JICS) is a network of charter schools in Colorado Springs, Colorado, serving student grades in kindergarten through twelfth grades.^[7] The school is named in honor of astronaut James Irwin, the eighth person to walk on the Moon. JICS features six schools, including three elementary schools, one middle school, one regular high school, and a vocational school.

The Astrozon elementary school campus, middle school, and high school are authorized by Harrison School District 2.^[8] The Howard elementary school campus is authorized by Colorado Springs School District 11,^[9] and the Canada Drive elementary campus and Power Technical (PTEC), the vocational school, are authorized by School District 49.^[10]

Enrollment

In the 2023–24 school year, JICS enrolled 2,033 students across its five schools. Among the elementary schools, there were 539 students at the Astrozon elementary school campus and 289 at the Howard elementary school campus.^[1][2] The elementary campus on Canada Drive was not opened until the 2024–25 school year. Among the secondary schools, the middle school had 419 students,^[3] the high school had 412,^[4] and Power Technical had 377.^[5] The racial demographics of all the schools showed that most students were white or Hispanic, and the rate of free and reduced lunch eligibility ranged from 40.6% at PTEC to 55.1% at the elementary school at the Astrozon campus.^{[1][2][3][4][5]}
