Radin Mas Single Member Constituency

The Radin Mas Single Member Constituency is a single member constituency (SMC) located in the central area of Singapore. It is managed by Tanjong Pagar Town Council. The current Member of Parliament (MP) is Melvin Yong from the governing People's Action Party (PAP).

History

Radin Mas Constituency was created in 1976, with Govindasamy Naidu from the PAP winning with 75.65% of the vote.^[1] Bernard Chen retained the constituency in one of two by-elections in 1977 after Naidu died.^[2] The PAP would continue to retain the constituency in the 1980 and 1984 general elections until 1988, when, with the creation of group representation constituencies (GRCs), it was abolished and made part of the three-member Tiong Bahru GRC.^[3][4][5]

For the 2011 general election, Radin Mas Single Member Constituency was carved from Tanjong Pagar GRC, where it had previously been a division.^[6][a] Sam Tan, the incumbent MP for the Radin Mas division, won the SMC with 67.1% of the vote against Yip Yew Weng from the National Solidarity Party (NSP).^[6][8]

In the 2015 general election, blogger Han Hui Hui ran as an independent candidate for the constituency. She won 10% of the vote, losing her election deposit of $14,500 in the process for not winning at least 12.5% of the vote. Tan, on the other hand, retained the SMC with an improved 77.25% of the vote in a three-cornered fight.^[9]

Prior to the 2020 general election, Tan retired from politics. Melvin Yong, the incumbent MP for the Moulmein–Cairnhill division in Tanjong Pagar GRC, was fielded by the PAP to retain the SMC;^[10] he won 74.01% of the vote against Kumar Appavoo from the Reform Party (RP), who had been contesting the SMC since 2015.^[11][12]

In the 2025 general election, Darryl Lo, another independent candidate, ran in the constituency, claiming that there was no "credible opposition" in Parliament, leading to a three-cornered fight.^[13] He won 23.47% of the local vote, while Kumar, now under the banner of the coalition People's Alliance for Reform (PAR), lost his $13,500 deposit with 7.36% of the vote. Yong, the incumbent MP for the SMC, won for the PAP with 69.17% of the vote, a decrease from the 74.01% he had won in 2020.^[12]

Constituency profile

Radin Mas SMC covers a portion of Bukit Merah, specifically the suburbs of Redhill, Bukit Merah Central, the eastern half of Telok Blangah, Bukit Purmei Estate and Mount Faber. In the north, it is served by Redhill MRT station (which technically lies in neighbouring Tanjong Pagar GRC) on the East–West Line, as well as Bukit Merah Bus Interchange (not related to the MRT station), while in the south, it is served by the MRT stations of Labrador Park, Telok Blangah, and HarbourFront (and its bus interchange).
