Joe Roth/Kirschenbaum Films is a dynamic production company with a rich history rooted in the careers of its two founders. The company's origins trace back to October 2007, when veteran film executive and producer Joe Roth established Roth Films.1 This move came as his previous production company, Revolution Studios, was concluding its distribution deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment.2 Roth, a former chairman of both Walt Disney Studios and 20th Century Fox, signed an overall production deal with Sony Pictures at the time, positioning his new venture for immediate work.3
Over its initial years, Roth Films found significant success, particularly with major fantasy blockbusters. Its inaugural production, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (2010), was a monumental hit, grossing over $1 billion worldwide.4 This early success set a precedent for the company's focus on high-concept, visually driven films. Other notable Roth Films productions during this period included Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) and Maleficent (2014), both of which were commercially successful.5
The company underwent a significant transformation in 2015 when Jeff Kirschenbaum joined as a partner.6 Kirschenbaum, who had a successful career as co-president of production at Universal Pictures, brought his experience with major franchises, including the Fast & Furious series, to the partnership.7 This collaboration led to the rebranding of the company to Roth/Kirschenbaum Films.8 The new name reflected the combined expertise of its founders and signaled a new chapter with a broader scope of projects.
Since the rebrand, the company has continued to produce a diverse slate of films across genres. Their work has included fantasy sequels like Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019), action-packed thrillers like xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017) and The Gray Man (2022), and critically acclaimed dramas such as The United States vs.9 Billie Holiday (2021).10 This consistent output and ability to adapt to different genres have solidified Roth/Kirschenbaum Films as a major player in contemporary Hollywood, with a reputation for creating commercially viable and globally appealing entertainment.
