Sant Parkash

Sant Parkash (born 27 April 1960) is a former judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and currently serving as the chairperson of the Punjab State Human Rights Commission since 2023.[1]

Early life
Parkash was born in Sirsa and completed his higher secondary education in Sirsa and then graduated from National College Sirsa. He completed his Bachelor in Law from Punjab University in the year of 1981.[2]

During this time period, he also served in various other posts and served as District and Session Judge in Districts of Jind, Rohtak and Kurukshetra for about seven years.[3]
Punjab human rights commission
Eight months after the retirement of the previous chairperson, Iqbal Ahmed Ansari, Sant Prakash was appointed the new chairperson of the Punjab State Human Rights Commission.[4] On 31 March 2023, he was appointed Chairperson of the Punjab State Human Rights Commission.[5]
After becoming the chairperson of the commission, he started focusing on the condition of the prisoners in the different jails of the Punjab, especially related to the health of the prisoners and medical facilities. He issued the safety orders after a survey report disclosed that around 42% of the jail inmates were on drugs.[6] To implement this order, Justice Sant Parkash often visits Punjab jails. While his visits at Amritsar Central Jail[7] and Faridkot Jail[8] and also interacted with the jail inmates to know the actual conditions. He also met police officials to discuss the issues related to senior citizens and rights of the central and women jails' inmates.[9]
