Shanghai Library (with a second name as the Shanghai Institute of Scientific and Technological Information) is a municipal public library in Shanghai, China. It is owned by the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.[1] The library is one of the largest libraries in the world. Its main building is in Xuhui, with a branch hall in Pudong.[2] As of 2024, it has a collection of 58 million volumes.[3]

At 24 stories and 348 feet (106 m) tall, the library's main building is the second tallest library in the world after the National Library of Indonesia in Jakarta.[4]

History

Shanghai Library was originally established in 1952.[5][6]

In 1958, Shanghai Library merged with Shanghai Science and Technology Library (formerly Mingfu Library), Shanghai Newspaper Library (formerly Hongying Library), and Shanghai Historical Documents Library (formerly United Library), which were all of considerable size at the time, to become the second largest public library in the country after the National Library of China.[7][3]

In November 1958, the Shanghai Institute of Scientific and Technical Information was established. In October 1995, Shanghai Library merged with the Shanghai Institute of Scientific and Technical Information to become a research-oriented public library and a comprehensive information research center.[5][3]
