Schuyler was introduced into America as a surname by 17th century Dutch settlers arriving in New York.^[1] By the 19th century, in honor of members of New York's Schuyler family such as Philip Schuyler, the surname had entered use as a given name;^{[citation needed]} for example, Schuyler Colfax (1823–1885), the 17th Vice President of the United States.
