History
The Shire is named after an earlier shire, the Shire of Towong (formed in 1874), which occupied the same region as the current LGA. In October 1920 the Shire of Upper Murray split off from the Shire of Towong; the latter shire was renamed the Shire of Tallangatta in 1974.[3]
As part of the substantial local government reforms of 1994, the Shire of Towong was created anew by amalgamating the Shires of Upper Murray and Tallangatta.[2]
